On Thursday, I went to see Rogue One (spoilers alert). The main character, Jyn, is introduced as a child just as her father is being forced back into service for the Empire. Separated from her parents, Jyn then wanders the galaxy with Saw Gerrera, a family friend, until he likewise abandons her on a planet when she was only sixteen. Though calloused by these experiences into a hardened survivor, a large portion of the film is impacted by Jyn’s struggle through the absence of her providers, mentors, and familial support. People (specifically children) need a grounded support system of some form.
As I make the final preparations for my study abroad, I’ve more fully realized my own relational, financial, and personal needs. The detailed chores involved in international travel like packing, acquiring the appropriate immunizations, and verifying my phone services are starting to pile up. Two weeks back, my car was totaled and as I wait for my insurance’s response, my mind plays about with hypothesized fiscal options as to how I might afford a car upon my return. Two nights back, my brother-in-law was startled upon realizing that I currently know none of the other individuals in my study abroad in Ecuador. At present, I have enlisted for an entire semester with no known family, friends, or mentors. This daunting adventure has made me (a rather independent individual) woefully familiar with many a personal weakness and necessity.
Yet, as I prepare to launch of on this new, exciting, and hopefully, enlightening experience (quite aware of the numerous challenges which have and will continue to arise), I find a peace and assurance in David’s words: “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.” Whatever my need, whether large or small can easily be answered by the LORD, who made both heaven and earth. Not only that, but this shepherd of mine declares Himself as my Father. Under the LORD’s care, one may confidently take refuge, though the horizon may yet appear intimidating.
In the next couple of months, as I walk this exciting journey, I will continue to post updates and prayer requests to Facebook. Please join me in this experience by praying that our Shepherd might powerfully direct me amidst my stay in Ecuador. Opening the appropriate doors and closing others. Giving me wisdom so that I might bless those I meet with courage and humility. Thank you all who have supported me and encouraged me in both this adventure and others–I have been extremely blessed by so many of you! May the LORD bless us all so that we join with David is declaring: “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
